Participation in the UAH Science Week

In the last 15th of November of 2024, we participated in the UAH Science Week, where our colleague Francisco Miguel González Pernas conducted a talk-workshop, included in an activity entitled “How does Global Change affect us? Discover how we scientists study it”.

Specifically, the workshop “The wonderful world of circular economy” explained some important aspects of circular economy, closely related to the objectives and actions of the ZeroLandFilling project. Among others topics, we talked about hierarchy of waste management operations, the application of thermochemical processes for waste valorization, the production of different bioproducts, such as biochar, wood vinegar and biobetun, as well as their application in agricultural environments. Also, several samples of waste and bioproducts were shown, and an experiment of inhibition of germination of different seeds with wood vinegar was carried out, attracting the attention of the public.

So far, the results obtained by the UAH are promising, having achieved the objective of obtaining different types of biochar with extraordinary surface properties (BET surfaces up to 1500 m2/g) and high adsorption of nutrients for subsequent application in agriculture. Likewise, the application of (inert) biochar mixed with compost is producing notable improvements in the production and quality of different crops.
